Are Fiber Supplements Safe to Take Daily?

When it comes to answering the above given question, one cannot say, for certain, an absolute yes or no since no evidence, at present, suggests that daily intake of fiber supplements can be harmful. However, this may vary from person to person and one cannot guarantee whether it will be safe or not.

There are many fiber supplements that are designed for relieving constipation and must be taken only for a limited amount of time. The reason behind this is that if a person is suffering from chronic constipation then its cause must be found out. It has also been observed that taking large quantities of fiber can lead to binding of minerals like iron, calcium and magnesium, reducing their consumption by the body. Intake of fiber supplements may also have some sort of conflict with any medications that you might be taking.

For example, if you are on some kind of anti-depressants like tricyclic or on some sort of medications like lithium, warfarin, aspirin or carbamazepine, then fiber supplements can reduce their absorption and effectiveness. Also, if you are diabetic then there is a possibility that fiber supplements can interfere with your medications like metformin and glyburide or might need to modify your dosage of insulin as they can decrease the sugar levels in your blood. Hence, it is always advisable to speak to your doctor to determine whether you need to take fiber supplements daily or not.
