Fiber Supplements are meant for people who are suffering from bowel dysfunction and abdominal spasms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or chronic intestinal diseases like Crohn’s Disease. It can also be taken by people who don’t have enough fiber in their bodies. Fibers are not any nutrient as thought by many people but are plant remains that our body is not able to digest. Fibers work by absorbing water in our digestive tract resulting in softer stools and hence help in the proper functioning of the digestive tract. Fiber supplements are available in different forms and types in the market. Of these, the ones made from polycarbophil, psyllium and methylcellulose are essential and are quite popular. Supplements made from psyllium husk are more frequently used than other supplements. As psyllium husk are soluble fibers, they absorb water and help in softening up the stool thus helping to calm constipation and relieve chronic diarrhea. However, it has been sometimes observed that psyllium husk supplements can lead to extra gas. Methylcellulose fiber supplements are obtained from those parts of the plants that are non-digestible like cell walls. Like psyllium husk supplements, they also help in making the stool soft. Both, psyllium husk and methylcellulose are commonly taken by adding them to water or juice.
