What Supplements Are Good for Cholesterol? |
Cholesterol is of two types-bad cholesterol or LDL and good cholesterol or HDL. Good cholesterol is essential for the functioning of the heart and the body at large. Bad cholesterol on the other hand is responsible for heart disease. Besides proper diet and exercise, some supplements are also good for cholesterol. Fish oil is the most popular supplement used to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is available in the form of capsules. If you prefer a vegetarian substitute for fish oil, flaxseed oil is a good choice. Artichoke extract has been shown to be effective in reducing LDL to some extent. Garlic extracts, oat bran, barley and sitostanol are also effective in reducing total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. A B vitamin called niacin has also been shown to be effective in boosting the levels of HDL. However, this has several side effects and niacin supplements should be taken only after consulting a doctor. Soy protein is also effective in reducing the levels of LDL. Red yeast rice can also help lower the levels of LDL. Some supplements used to manage cholesterol contain soluble fiber. Fiber is effective in reducing LDL levels. Other substances like fenugreek, ginseng, guggul etc are still being researched for their role in managing cholesterol. |
