Dangers of Low Potassium

Potassium is an important mineral to maintain good health and overall well being. This mineral has several functions in the body. It maintains electrolyte balance, cardiovascular health, nerve functioning, protein synthesis, nuclei acid synthesis etc. Potassium is obtained from foods like meat, chicken, fish, sardines, citrus fruits, bananas, melons, apricots etc.

Some people may suffer from a deficiency of potassium. This is caused due to poor dietary habits excess secretion of potassium from the body through bowel movements or vomiting. This could be a side effect of some medications. Hyperthyroidism can also cause potassium deficiency. Potassium deficiency is called hypokalemia. It is characterized by symptoms like fatigue, muscle weakness, anxiety, confusion, temporary memory loss, sleep disturbances, poor cognitive functions, acne, heart deterioration etc. Some people experience a ringing noise in the ear. Others experience digestive problems like diarrhea; constipation etc. Potassium deficiency can also cause hypertension.

Extreme potassium deficiency causes a condition called hypokalemic paralysis where the entire body stiffens up. Treatment for hypokalemia is mainly directed at treating the symptoms like diarrhea, high BP etc. Doctors may prescribe pills coated with potassium. The patient will be advised to eat a diet rich in potassium. Potassium supplements may also be recommended.
