Prenatal vitamins mean vitamin supplements which must be taken when a woman is pregnant. This will ensure good health of mother as well as the fetus. Prenatal vitamins are also important for a lactating mother.
It is true that a healthy diet is the most important source of vitamins and other nutrients. But still, there are a few vitamins and minerals which we don’t get enough from the food we eat. And so, American Dietetic Association has recommended the intake of prenatal vitamins to have a healthy pregnancy.
Prenatal vitamins include folic acid, iron and calcium. Folic acid helps to prevent birth defects in the fetus. Iron is needed by body to stay healthy and fit. And calcium will be required for mother who is breast feeding. These nutrients ensure a very healthy fetus which is free from birth defects. However, it is important to start these pre natal vitamins only after the doctor’s recommendation.
Along with prenatal vitamins, a pregnant woman must have a very healthy diet. A healthy diet includes inclusion of milk and milk products, green and leafy vegetables, fruits and lots of water. However, at the time when a woman is pregnant vitamin A supplements are not recommendable. |
