Are There Supplements For Serotonin Levels?

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is associated with sleep, mood, emotions, appetite etc. Decreased serotonin levels are believed to be responsible for problems like sleeping disorders, depression, anxiety, eating disorders etc. Serotonin supplements are used to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin supplements contain 5 hydroxytryptophan, a precursor of serotonin.

Serotonin as such cannot cross the blood brain barrier. Its precursor (5-HTP) can enter the cells of the central nervous system where it is used to synthesize serotonin. Serotonin supplement dosage between 100 mg and 300 mg is considered to be safe and effective. Serotonin supplements can cause side effects like nausea, headaches, dizziness, rashes, gastrointestinal disturbances etc. A rare but severe condition called serotonin syndrome is associated with serotonin intake. People who have cardiovascular disorders, liver diseases, lung diseases, anemia etc and pregnant women should consult a doctor before using serotonin supplements. These supplements can interact with anti depressants, weight loss mediations, antibiotics, chemotherapy, barbiturates etc.

Therefore, it is best to use such supplements in consultation with a doctor. Serotonin supplements are widely used to treat eating disorders, obesity, food cravings, sleep disorders etc. It is also used to counter mood swings and irritability associated with PMS. People who wish to quit smoking or alcohol can use serotonin supplements to ease withdrawal symptoms.
