Can Supplements Stop Diarrhea?

Diarrhea is mainly caused due viral gastroenteritis o bacterial infection. Some supplements can help stop or reduce the tendency to develop diarrhea. Zinc boosts the immune system and helps ward away infections and thereby prevent diarrhea. Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin which plays a role in production of mucus membranes which line the gastrointestinal tract, eyes etc. Deficiency of this vitamin can lead to diarrhea.

Supplements containing probiotic microorganisms like the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii or the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus are widely used to treat diarrhea. It works by promoting digestion and creating an environment hostile to pathogenic microbes. Supplements containing soluble and insoluble dietary fiber derived from psyllium husk, dried beans, fruits etc can help relieve mild to moderate diarrhea. Bilberry contains tannins which have anti inflammatory effects. It can be used to reduce inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and ease diarrhea.

Extracts from the bark of the slippery elm can also be used to reduce inflammation of mucus membranes. Arrowroot has high starch content and can be used to sooth irritated inflamed and painful mucus membranes of the digestive tract. Barberry extracts can be used to treat diarrhea since it has astringent properties and kills pathogenic bacteria responsible for the condition. Supplements containing extracts of ginger, garlic, peppermint etc are also widely used to stop diarrhea.
