What Is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is also called as ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is water soluble. Thus the extra portion will not be stored and will rather be excreted. You must therefore be regular in supply of vitamin C to your body.

Vitamin C is essential for bodily functions. Some of the main functions of vitamin C are improving absorption of iron, prevention of cancer, protection from cell damage, preventing scurvy etc.

The deficiency of vitamin C will give rise to symptoms like lung problems, cold, infections, viruses, poor wound healing etc. When you find some such things are happening, you must increase intake of the foods that are rich in vitamin C.

Some of the foods that are very rich in vitamin C are cauliflower, lemon, oranges, papaya, broccoli, strawberries, mustard greens, Brussels sprouts etc.

However, something that you must know about vitamin C is that it is highly sensitive to air, temperature and water. Thus it is important to derive this nutrient from fresh fruits and raw vegetables. Things like cooking, processing, freezing, heating etc destroy the natural vitamin that is present. It is therefore important to prefer raw and fresh fruits and vegetables rather than canned and processed ones. People who have a diet that is poor in fresh fruits and vegetables may have deficiency of vitamin C.
