What Is Vitamin B6?

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin and belongs to vitamin B complex group. Vitamin B6 being water soluble vitamin, it dissolves in water and thus cannot be stored in the body. This means that your body must consistently get foods and supplements that are rich in vitamin B6. The reason is that the left over is removed with your urine.

Function: The other name of vitamin B6 is pyridoxine. It helps in brain functioning and conversion of protein into energy. Vitamin B6 helps in making your immune system stronger. Vitamin B6 helps to produce antibodies which impart a very good defense mechanism to your body to fight infections and other health ailments. Vitamin B6 helps in formation of red blood corpuscles and aids nerve functioning. Vitamin B6 breaks down proteins and this would mean that the more you have protein in your diet, the more you need vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is vital for women who are breast feeding or are pregnant.

Source: Foods like beans, eggs, nuts, cereals, fish, whole grains, whole wheat bread and legumes are rich sources of vitamin B6. It is important to fetch the required amount of vitamin B6 from the daily meals. But in case if you are not able to derive the same you can rely on vitamin B6 health supplements after taking advice from your doctor.
